Why my knife is rusty?

Rust is an electrochemical reaction that occurs when a metal comes in contact with water. This is a sign of corrosion and thus the steel embrittlement.

Even stainless steel blade can be altered by seawater as it contains a small proportion of carbon and salt binds to the carbon molecules, showing very small rust spots. To remove them, you have to rub the blade with sandpaper with very fine grains (2000) so as not to scratch it.

What can I do to prevent my rusty knife?

If the blade has been in contact with acidic products (sea water, fruit, blood, sweat ...), it should wipe and apply a protective oily product, such as "3 in 1".

- Always carefully wipe the blade of his knife after use with a soft dry cloth.
- Lubricate the blade of his knife time to time to feed, steel miter can also be greased with an oily protection product
- Do not keep the knife in a wet location
- stow his knife in a suitable case

Good to know !

Fingerprints that is left on the knife blade are sometimes acids, according to perspiration of people, if these traces are not properly wiped, they may subsequently cause a corrosion beginning and therefore rust following the steels.
